Why Graphic Designers and Artists Shouldn't Fear Artificial Intelligence

Exploring the limitations of AI in the creative industry and the continued value of the human touch.

As a graphic designer or artist, you may have heard some buzz that artificial intelligence is coming to steal your job. With image generators like NightCafe, DALL-E 2, and DeepAI as well as copy generators like Chat GPT, Copy.ai, and so much more, it feels like our industry is already completely disrupted!

But, I insist, you need not fear!

While, yes, AI technology is becoming increasingly advanced and wildly capable, it will never be able to fully replace the human touch needed for artists and graphic designers to create truly compelling work. All AI programs still need a human to prompt the generation of these ideas, images and copy.

AI needs YOU, not the other way around.

Plus, as the graphic design industry has already experienced, despite the implementation for technology, human-centered design and craftsmanship will always be desired.

Graphic design is a creative field that requires human understanding, empathy, and truly creative thinking. It’s not just about arranging elements on a page or screen, but about creating something that resonates with people on a deeper, more empathetic level. Design and art connect humans to humans, humans to ideas, or humans to products.

AI may be able to replicate some of the technical aspects of graphic design and art, but it can't replicate the unique perspective and creativity that comes from your human experiences and perspectives. AI is still incredibly formulaic and predictable in a way that true creatives have far surpassed.

Furthermore, even as AI technology continues to advance, there will always be a need for the human component of art and designer. While there are still a lot of moral and ethical concerns and conversations to be had about AI, I do think that it can be leveraged by graphic designers and artists to handle routine tasks and automate certain processes, giving you more time to focus on being truly creative.

Also, consider that the field of graphic design is constantly evolving. As new trends and technologies emerge, graphic designers will be needed to keep up with these changes and provide fresh, innovative ideas and perspectives. And there’s a huge distinction here! Because, while AI may be able to scan the entirety of the internet and learn from past design trends, it is not able to anticipate and adapt to future trends in the same way that human designers can.

As a graphic designer, you have empathy, you have the ability to read people and rooms, and you have the ability to predict in a way that leverages intuition and emotion… artificial intelligence is still, well, artificial. It’s just computers.

I truly think that if you’re a graphic designer or creative entrepreneur, you don’t need to be concerned about AI “stealing your job.”

Instead, embrace the technology and use it to enhance your skills and capabilities. Remember that the human touch will always be an essential component of great design, and that your unique perspective and creativity will always be in demand.

Cheers,

Adam
